Introduction To Vaulting Boards Events
Gymnastics is a competitive sport that requires good sense of balance, rhythm, endurance, strength, flexibility and agility. All these factors
are required to perform all the movements and positions correctly. These skills are acquired through years of dedicated training through various
gymnastics’ apparatus like vaulting boards, rings, balance beams, etc. If you wish get your kids into this sport, you better enroll them into
gymnastics class in their early age as young kids still have softer bones and flexible muscles, ideal for training in this kind of sport.
There are actually three major forms of competitive gymnastics usually held in big international competition like Olympics; the artistic,
rhythmic, and trampoline events. Artistic gymnastics is both for male and female gymnasts while rhythmic event is only open for female
competitors.
Artistic gymnastics has been part of modern Olympic Games since 1896. This event is made even more popular by extensive media and television
coverage later in 20th century.
In Olympic events, the performance of the gymnasts is scored based on the level of difficulty and the way they execute their routines. There
are four to six trained judges who will use a ten-point scoring system in each round called Code of Points. Scoring standards of big gymnastics
events are determined by the international governing body of the sport.
Artistic gymnastics has prescribed sets of events for the competition. Vaulting boards’ events for example, are separately scored by judges to
decide for the individual winner.
Vaulting boards’ routines for men’s competition involves the use of equipment called the horse. This equipment usually measure 1.6m or 5.2ft
long and 1.35m or 4.4ft high from the ground and has no pommels (unlike the pommel horse). Gymnasts will approach the equipment lengthwise and
run into it. He then takes off from a springboard and place both hands on top of the equipment, then completes his routine with acrobatic
airborne moves and end with a controlled and poised landing.
Vaulting board’s events for women is the same as in the men’s event, except that the equipment is lowered to a height of 1.2m or 3.9ft and is
approached by the gymnasts from the side.
